Much to the surprise of most people around Nashville, the area was home to one of the largest unearthed sites of Mississippean Native American culture outside of the Cahokia site. A massive complex was found on the Harpeth State Park property that has been mapped and studied since the 70s. The site is only available to visit through park excursions, which the park has fairly regularly. I was able to join one of these excursions and hike to the site, which isn't terribly far and hear a lot of information about the people and the site in question. The park is hoping to make a museum for the site sometime in the future, but in the meantime pack the bug spray and join one of the park hiking groups. Also be aware of your surroundings. I got a gnarly case of poison ivy from hiking around the site. If you're willing to battle the heat and the bugs, you'll be privy to see one of the most untravelled Mississippean sites known and right in your backyard.

The Adventure Science Center in Nashville is fun for children and adults. I should know having taken my godson and his boyfriend (both 25) to the museum and laser show at the planetarium. The museum offers laser shows to music on Saturday nights in the summer and we had a great time. While there were plenty of children at the museum, we got there about 2 hours before closing and had time to experience most of the exhibits before going to the laser show which is held after hours in the planetarium. Definitely a fun, inexpensive outing that is something different from going to the movies or out to dinner. |
