If you're looking for a recreational area that isn't as wildly trafficked as some, Land Between the Lakes is a great place for a weekend. There are several notable stops in the national recreational area that are worth a visit. Stop at the Golden Pond Planetarium where you can get a nice planetarium show for a reasonable price (this is also the largest gift shop). Next we headed to the Elk and Bison Prairie right up the road. This is a great drive through park that allows for viewing of the elk and bison. The elk were all rather far away, but thankfully a group of bison were on the move next to the road so we got some good shots. After that we headed to the Wildlife Nature Center. There are a number of exhibits of animals there of wildlife in the park. While we were there we went just a little ways to Hematite Trail and ate lunch and then hiked around the lake. Finally we went to the Homeplace, a recreation of an 1800s farm. There are plenty of farm animals and it is a working farm. It wasn't too busy when we went so we had a long talk with one of the rangers. Land Between the Lakes is just right for a full day of visiting with family and is informative with a wide variety of activities from history to science.

Outside of Pulaski there is a very nice education center with an outdoor space with walking trails. Wolf Gap was the name of the African American community that lived in the area historically and a grant ended up building a very nice education and interpretive center. When I went there was no one there, but it was a nice day for a walk and the history center had very good information about the local area. There were also several quilts that local ladies had made documenting the African American churches that were in the area. It's a nice place for a picnic and a well researched look at lives that normally weren't well documented. |
